Ring of Accuracy

The Legend of William Oh

The Ring of Accuracy is a mutated relic whose value lies less in ordinary precision than in the dangerous interaction between its projectile effect and Will’s existing abilities. Its Manhunter property can draw struck creatures toward the shooter along the projectile’s path, allowing Will to convert an apparently defensive or evasive setup into a repeatable kill mechanism.

Definition and Properties

The item is identified as Ring of Accuracy and is marked with an asterisk, indicating the altered form examined by Will and Loth. Its listed enhancement is +7 Strength, accompanied by 4 degrees of correction. The ring therefore offers a direct physical increase as well as a correction effect associated with accurate projectile use, but its most consequential feature is not the numerical bonus.

The ring’s special property is Manhunter: when a creature is struck by a projectile from the wearer, the target is drawn toward the shooter along the projectile’s path, with the force scaling according to Strength. The effect changes the usual geometry of ranged combat. A projectile no longer merely travels toward an enemy; once it connects, the enemy is compelled to travel back along that same line, turning distance into a controllable route of approach.

Discovery and Initial Assessment

Loth studies the ring after examining other equipment and recognizes that it is not a standard example of the item. She calls it a mutated Ring of Accuracy. Will notes that its statistics are not as good as the Ring of Accuracy worn by Alicia Zodiac, while the Manhunter effect initially seems actively undesirable for a Scout: a ranged specialist generally benefits from keeping a target away, not drawing it closer.

That first assessment treats the ring as an isolated object. Its apparent defect becomes an advantage only when it is placed within Will’s broader Build. The ring’s usefulness is therefore revealed through combination rather than comparison. A weaker-looking version of a familiar relic becomes more valuable when its altered rule fits an ability Will already uses with unusual effectiveness.

Interaction with Phantom Hand and the Tracers

Loth identifies the decisive interaction by asking whether the ring would draw enemies directly onto Will’s tracers. Will immediately understands the implication. His Phantom Hand can shoot tracers across a path, while the wrist guard and Sting Ring provide curtains of fire and acid along that route. Ordinarily, enemies might evade the suspended danger or fail to enter it at the right moment; Manhunter supplies the missing force by dragging a struck enemy through the projectile’s line.

The resulting arrangement is a layered trap. A projectile hits its target, the ring pulls that target toward the shooter along the shot’s path, and the forced movement carries the enemy through the curtain of fire. Because the Sting Ring also adds acid damage, the route inflicts more than one kind of harm. The ring thus makes Will’s tracers reliable: the target is not merely exposed to the trap but drawn through it, ensuring that the tracers hit every time according to Will’s assessment.

The combination also causes the Sting Ring to apply its bonus damage twice. The first contribution comes from the original attack, while the second is produced when the enemy is pulled through the damaging curtain. Will describes the arrangement as a soft-set, meaning a powerful tactical setup produced by fitting the right relic effect into an already established ability pattern rather than by replacing the entire Build.

Tactical Significance and Transfer to Will

The Ring of Accuracy exposes the difference between an item’s surface description and its practical function. A Scout’s instinct might reject Manhunter because bringing enemies closer appears to cancel the safety of range. In Will’s hands, however, the enemy’s approach is no longer uncontrolled. The path is prepared in advance, bordered by tracer-born fire and acid, so forced proximity becomes a mechanism of punishment.

The ring also demonstrates how the System’s equipment rules reward interaction among relics and abilities. Its +7 Strength determines the force of Manhunter, while the projectile condition links the wearer’s attack to the movement effect. Phantom Hand supplies the tracers, the wrist guard supplies fire and acid, and Sting Ring increases the damage. None of these elements alone explains the ring’s final value; together they create a new tactical function that the item’s ordinary name does not disclose.

When the possibility becomes clear, Will does not leave the ring for later testing. He asks for it and snatches it from the air, pocketing it while Loth moves on to another relic. That immediate decision marks the ring’s transition from overlooked equipment to a central component of his combat strategy. Its importance comes from the discovery that an apparent liability—drawing enemies toward the shooter—can become the exact force needed to make his existing trap unavoidable.
